A much-hailed shipment of protective equipment from Turkey actually contains a fraction of the gowns that were ordered, according to the Health Service Journal.
The HSJ has spoken to “senior procurement sources” who claim that only 32,000 gowns have arrived in the UK – a fraction of the 400,000 that were ordered.
As a result, it looks like the highly publicised shipment has so far only delivered enough PPE to serve the NHS for just a few hours.
Indeed, due to the pressures of coronavirus, the NHS currently goes through 150,000 gowns a day.
The bulk delivery of PPE was supposed to arrive over the weekend, but logistical problems meant it was delayed until yesterday – needing an intervention from the RAF to finally deliver the equipment.
However, it now turns out it might not have been worth the effort, after all.
The Department of Health and Social Care has been approached for comment.
