House of Lords veteran and Holocaust survivor Alf Dubs has called for Jacob Rees-Mogg to be sacked over comments about Jewish philanthropist George Soros.
Rees-Mogg has attracted heavy criticism after attacking Soros in the House of Commons earlier today. He said:
“One of the major funders allegedly of the Remain campaign, the Remoaner funder-in-chief, is one George Soros, who made a billion pounds when Sterling crashed out of the exchange rate mechanism.”
In response, Dubs said that Rees-Mogg’s comments were “straight from the far right’s anti-Semitic playbook.”
He added that Prime Minister Boris Johnson “must condemn” Rees-Mogg’s remarks and fire him as Speaker of the House of Commons.
Dubs is a vocal advocate of refugee rights and arrived in Britain on the Kindertransport in 1939.
Soros also lived through the Nazi persecution of Budapest from 1944-45 and is a known funder of several anti-Brexit groups.
However, it has often been argued that the right’s obsession with Soros, who is just one of many people to have contributed to the fight against Brexit, is blatantly anti-Semitic.
It’s time someone was held to account.
