The co-author of the 2019 Conservative manifesto has called on the party to urgently reform one of the key elements of Universal Credit.
Robert Colvile, Director of the CPS think tank, tweeted last night to say that Boris Johnson should abolish the five-week wait for Universal Credit benefits payments.
Currently, everyone who applies for Universal Credit has to wait five weeks for their first payment.
With the system now overloaded with applicants, due to the economic hardship caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Colvile and other experts have warned that people will need money much faster than five weeks.
Coronavirus is exposing gaping holes in the social security systems put in place by the Conservatives. Let’s hope they take this opportunity to fix them.
