A Conservative councillor has been called to resign, after sharing “Islamophobic” social media posts.
It has been revealed that Colin Elcock, who sits on Dudley Council (Stourbridge), posted tweets claiming Islam represents “domination not integration.”
Following the escalation of tensions between Iran and the United States, Elcock also tweeted to ask whether everyone in Iran is “on the dole”.
In response, Labour councillor Pete Lowe has called for Elcock’s immediate suspension and resignation.
“This is a reflection on the culture and atmosphere of Stourbridge Conservative association,” he said.
“It shows the extent of Islamophobia at the heart of the Conservative Party and why it should be investigated fully by the Conservative Party nationally, anything less is a dereliction of duty to every single voter in Stourbridge.”
Lowe also accused Elcock of sexism, after it was additionally revealed that the Tory councillor had replied to an image, posted seemingly by a porn bot, of a woman’s buttocks. Elcock had commented: “Bloody hell wow! Hello”.
The tweets in question have now been deleted, and the local Tory group are meeting tomorrow to discuss the issue.
Meanwhile, Elcock says he was probably wrong to post his comments about Islam. Speaking to a local newspaper, he said:
“I’m not Islamophobic at all, I see it as an innocent comment… I realised I was probably wrong in saying those things and that I had made a mistake.
“I have no plans to resign, there was no malice. Pete Lowe is muckraking.”
Given that Elcock is not even aware of his own prejudices, this seems even more reason for the local Tories to ditch him.
