A Brexit Party MEP is to speak at private New York Republican club that boasts annual fees of over $2000.
Alexandra Phillips, MEP for the South East England, will speak at the Women’s National Republican Club in New York tomorrow, regaling the audience about all things Brexit.
The Women’s National Republican Club is the oldest institution for female Republicans in the US. It hosts regular speakers and social events, though its doors are not open to everyone.
Indeed, annual membership of the club is a minimum of $2042.61 – incorporating membership fees, a $500 initiation fee (!) and food/drink costs. Applicants must also provide a summary of their educational backgrounds, professional careers and be recommended by two existing members.
Phillips, who used to work for the parent company of Cambridge Analytica, is not the only Brexit Party figure to let their working-class facade slide. Nigel Farage has attended dinners at 5 Hertford Street, the controversial private members club which is currently embroiled in a scandal about how much it pays its staff.
Meanwhile, Phillips’s trip may be designed to drum up international backing for Brexit, after Farage helped to create a US-based group called World for Brexit in July.
The New York Young Republican Club, who have arranged the event, will also host an event with Steve Bannon in November, with tickets costing up to $1,800.
Phillips is now clearly toeing the party line – attacking the establishment well within its centre.
